February 2013 MAP Meeting Topics

At our meeting on February 14, 2013, we discussed the following topics:

Legal Issues of Writing and Publishing Books:

MAP member, Darlene Prescott, recommends the book, The Copyright Permission and Libel Handbook, by Lloyd J. Jassin and Steven C. Schechter for information regarding some of the legal issues involved in writing and publishing books. She also reports that the Texas Accountants and Lawyers in the Arts (TALA) will review author/publisher contracts free of charge -- if you meet their eligibility requirements http://talarts.org.

Sharing Display Space at Book and Craft Fairs:

Andy Upchurch, author of The Oleanders of San Leon,  would like to find a person who is interested in sharing a booth to sell books at local events, such as arts and crafts fairs, bazaars, music festivals, etc. He says, “This has been a FUN and profitable way for me to get my book into circulation.”  For more information, contact Andy at: andyupch@aol.com. He will be glad to answer your questions.  If you are interested in sharing a booth with Andy, please contact him as soon as possible, so he will be ready when he finds a show that might be a good one.

Galveston Book Store Features Texas Authors:

Coral Beach, author of  Happy Hour in Paradise, reports that the Galveston Bookshop at 317 23rd Street is now hosting monthly meet and greets for Texas authors. Fellow MAP member, Andy Upchurch, was featured during February. If you would like to participate, contact Sharan Zwick at (409) 750-8200 or email at oleandercity@yahoo.com.  For more information about the events, visit the following link:  http://galvestonbookshop.com/?cat=17
